How to build a Community
April 12, 2007
So I was talking today with a fellow student, and he gave me the link of his blog, where I found a number of interesting articles. One of them being an an entry on how one builds a community. It reminded me of how Bioware started out at the Black Isle forums, where the old Baldur’s Gate games were the subject of tweaking, editing and expanding.
This process was tricky to learn however, and you needed quite a bit of technical know-how to actually add your own quests events and custom patches to the game to get it to work. The next D&D game that came from Bioware was “Neverwinter Nights” this game came with it’s own full blown toolset, and “.hak” system. The community took the tools given to her, and grew exponentially. Now the second edition of the game is out, and the toolset present with that game is nothing short of mind blowing. After seven years I’m -still- playing the old game, never having touched the single player campaign, this gives me much hope for NWN 2.
This leads me to believe that the post here is quite accurate when it comes to explaining what factors are required to make a community great. All the components were present in the growth of the community of Neverwinter Nights.
